As you all know by now, even after living in New York City for close to twenty years, I still look at this wonderful city like a tourist. I never get bored and I am always looking for exciting new places within the five boroughs to visit, cultural events to attend, places to eat at. How thrilled I am that my five year old son Karate Boy, is equally as adventurous as his Mum. My partner in crime at my side, we have been discovering all hidden gems throughout the tri state, and we love sharing them with you all. Last Sunday it was the Egg Rolls & Egg Creams Festival on the Lower East-side.
This week I read this fantastic article in the New York Times , the heading was ” Taking the A Train to Summer“ . I urge you to read it to get a more detailed look into how the Rockaways in Queens has transformed from a place of urban neglect to a hangout for young artsy types who make their homes in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. The Rockaways has also coincided with the swell of surf culture. I had planned to explore The Rockaways one weekend during the summer. I read in the Daily News on Friday that there was this festival taking place this past Saturday ” 5th Annual Rockstock and Barrels, 90th St. and The Boardwalk, Rockaway Beach. Surf Contest-Skate Jam-Concert this Saturday (10 a.m.-6 p.m.) family friendly and FREE.”
What a perfect adventure for Karate Boy and his nine year old cousin Daniel, who is on holiday with us for the summer. Surfing, skateboarding, and Rock n roll, you can’t beat that for two little dudes like Karate Boy and Daniel. To be even more adventurous, instead of taking the car and driving there, we followed the route that the New York Times Article wrote about above ” Taking the A Train to Summer”. I was a bit skeptical at first, taking the subway to a beach? Then I thought, I am The Adventurista after all, if anyone can do this smoothly, it will be me of course. Off we went, the boys were armed with their Nintendo Ds1 games and we headed to The Rockaways via the A Train. We had the best time at the beach, what a way to start the summer season. I completely recommend that you take a trip down to The Rockaways with the family, friends or just solo. There is a bit of everything for one to get into and of course, there is SURFING!!!! I will leave my photo diary below to show how fabulous and fun our adventure at The Rockaways was. A few mentions of the places we frequented follows my photo diary. Hope you enjoy looking at the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.
