This past Sunday on a very cold day, Karate Boy and I ventured out of our warm cozy home and headed to a  fabulous bookstore called PowerHouse Arena in Dumbo for a special kids reading and book signing by Academy Award nominated film director Spike Lee, his wife Tonya Lewis Lee, and award-winning artist and illustrator Sean Qualls book, Giant Steps to Change the World, their new book for kids about activism and taking the big steps to set things right.

 About the book:

Following the success of their much beloved picture books, Please, Baby, Please and Please, Puppy, Please, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Spike Lee and his talented wife Tonya Lewis Lee offer up an inspirational picture book about activism that can change one’s life and one’s world. Illuminated with illustrations by the award-winning artist Sean Qualls, Giant Steps to Change the World will inspire readers young and old to take the steps to make a positive impact to both change themselves, and ponder what they can contribute to society.

Using examples of people throughout history from all walks of life who have taken “giant steps,” this book urges kids to follow in the footsteps of those who came before, and not be hindered by fear or a sense that they are not good enough. Each spread is about a real-life figure who has proven that despite the challenges, even the smallest step can make a difference. The front and back flaps of the book reveal who the figure is, along with a quote by that person.

We had such a fantastic time, I will put a disclaimer that The Powerhouse Arena features wonderful photographers and their photos and there are some with nudity. It was artistic and Karate Boy did not seem to notice, he was to interested in all the books, kids and yummy chocolate cup-cakes that were there. My little guy was able to meet Spike and Tonya Lewis Lee personally, Tonya told him ” I love your hair!” I wanted to also mention the most delicious gluten-free cup-cakes by http://www.cookingwithchefmichelle.com/

Tonya Lewis Lee, was asked how did she choose the people  she featured in the book that took ” giant steps”? Her response was  ” These were people that inspired her personally.” I advice everyone reading this post to pick a copy up of  Giant Steps  it is a great read for the kids and for the grown-ups  as well.
