We’ve had a slightly less productive week this week.  Birthdays and the prospect of a new job have disturbed our usual cooking rhythm, and I fear that said job will continue to disrupt my dedication to the cause.  Expect many more ‘speedy’ recipes and less baking.  My husband will be distraught.

In anticipation of my impending lack of time, I made “Quick calamari pasta”, which was both fast to make and yummy to eat.  This may be back on the menu in the coming weeks.

For this week at least baking has most certainly been on the menu.  It’s all those birthdays!  Kirstin tried a cake that certainly caught my eye when I first went through the book, Nigella’s “Devil’s food cake”, with less than perfect results.  After last week’s chocolate chip cookie challenge I gave the “Everyday brownies” a go.  I wasn’t convinced that the recipe was any more ‘everyday’ than the Bill Granger recipe from last month, but I left the verdict to the experts.

Finally we made fantastically mad “Red velvet cupcakes” for our friend Zoe’s 40th birthday.  Fun, but dangerous, to make they were a huge hit at Zoe’s party.  And judging by the number of comments we’ve received they are also hugely popular with the blogosphere!
