Rule of Thirds

I have to admit that before 2010 I had never heard of the Rule of Thirds. Despite however many years I spent in medical school, this was not one of the basic things we learnt about (although learning how to pronounce mad drug names would definitely also have been useful, it has to be said).

Dividing each picture into ninths and then learning to place the subject away from the centre or indeed the horizon from the middle has been a real personal challenge of mine. I took this portrait of Ella last week. She was originally looking at a bubble which popped as I took the picture. I didn’t see the rule of thirds until a random flickr comment pointed it out to me. Truly I think I should have this rule burnt into my eyelids until I remember it….Rule of Thirds, Rule of Thirds, Rule of Thirds.

Gayle, just try not putting your subject in the middle, but off to the side. Or when you take a landscape shot, try to get the horizon either a third or two thirds up the picture. And keep snapping away! You’ll get it!
